Energy efficiency not only prevents the loss of energy and waste of electricity, but it also helps reduce the amount of pollution and waste we create. Additionally, it saves you money. Every time you make your home more energy efficient you are directly lowering your utility costs and having a positive effect on the environment. There are simple measures and steps you can take to becoming more energy efficient while lowering your utility costs. In the home and business alike, there are always ways to improve.

How To Become Energy Efficient

Make sure the entire building is well insulated. Check basement walls, ceilings, floors, wall edges, etc. Check for exposed holes or cracks that need to be sealed.

Turn everything that you can off. If it's not in use, why leave it on? Television sets, radios, computers, unnecessary lighting, all of these generate heat and waste electricity. If they're not needed, then save money and energy, and turn them off.

...idle power consumption adds up...

Many electronics use power even when they are off. Some may still draw up to 40% of the power used when the appliance is running. This idle power consumption adds up to a higher monthly bill. To control this undesired cost, unplug the electronics from the wall. Alternatively use power-strips that can be shut off eliminating idle power usage.

Setup your computers so they automatically shut off after being inactive for a certain amount of time. The same can easily be done with monitors. This not only saves energy, ...directly reduces heat production...it directly reduces heat production.

Consider looking into landscaping and the planning around shading your facility or home. Shade helps keep buildings cool by blocking sunlight. Additionally, if there is growth around a building it often acts to keep it warmer when it is cold outside by trapping in heat.

Look into adding solar shades or tinting film to your windows to reduce heat from coming in. Alternatively you can install shades or awnings to keep sunlight and heat out.
